Pulmonary(Lung) Function Test

• This is a very specialized and standardized test done with a sophisticated machine. It measures the volume of air that a patient takes out forcefully and long in three to six seconds after taking in maximal breath. It tells us the percentage of Lung function that patient can blow out with maximal efforts.

• It tells us about our lungs functions. It measures the volume of air that patient or a child tries to blow out. In children the normal values should be above 90% of the predicted values according to the patient’s age and height

• In children it can be performed above 4 years using various incentives like blowing the balloon fully and bursting and getting stars or blowing off the candles and many more.

• It is done in a playful manner; child performs it with a competitive spirit.

• It is indicated in patients who come with h/o chronic cough that is not treated with medications and diagnosis of asthma or bronchitis has to be confirmed

• It is also done to see the improvement in lung function after giving standard course of inhaled medications, or when we have to decrease or stop the doses.

• Sometimes after performing the test, the lung functions are decreased then it can be repeated after giving dose of bronchodilator in the form of inhaled medicine. And thereafter noting the percentage change or improvement in the test. This is known as reversibility or post bronchodilator test.

• The results are appropriate if done with standardized and well calibrated machine

• Our center has well standardized portable flow sensor sophisticated machine that has good flow sensors into which sterilized or disposable spirets are inserted and after calibration the test is performed. It has very accurate results.

• At many places and commercial Lab the test may not be appropriate as machine needs to be standardized so costs of the test vary.

• At proper PFT center the cost of the test vary from Rs 1600-Rs 2300.

• It helps in confirming the diagnosis, assessing the degree of the disease and response to treatment.

• Dr Jasmeet Kaur Waxhaw, leading Pediatric Pulmonologist is well trained in performing and reading the Pulmonary function tests, She has been performing test for more than 10 years and had done lots of research and training on this subject.
